The BMC’s FUNdamentals of Climbing are structured, fun 1-day  sessions, which help develop good movement and technique which help climbers move better and climb harder. This is quite different from what a lot of climbers experience as “beginner’s courses” which is usually just focused on technical or safety based training. This is a peculiarity of climbing, whereas coaches or instructors in other sports are there to help you play the sport better, (foot strike patterns in running, forehands in tennis, curling a ball in football) most new participants to climbing are primarily directed to safety based learning. As a result many climbers make their first steps (or pulls!) onto the wall without really understanding how to climb effectively or improve their climbing.

Is this course suitable for me?

The FUNdamentals Workshops were originally designed for anyone who is on Mountain Training’s coaching qualifications and are developing their coaching skills for assessment. However the FUNdamentals workshops are an excellent way for recreational climbers who are looking to develop their own skills, or for instructors wanting enrich their sessions by helping climbers' to develop. For those who want to develop their climbing in a more intensive manner, the 1-day course format can work really well bringing them together with like minded individuals keep to progress their climbing. We’ve recently delivered the course to as many recreational climbers as we have done to those working as climbing wall instructors!

What do the courses cover?

There are 3 levels of FUNdamentals that focus on Technique:

  • FUNdamentals 1 is for new climbers who are primarily focuses on developing the foundational movements required for climbing. The movement principles covered FUNdamentals 1 should be the basis for any climber - irrespective of the types of climbing they choose to participate in, be that indoor,  competition, trad climbing, bouldering, sport climbing, or a combination of them all. The workshop primarily focuses on slab or near vertical walls.
  • FUNdamentals 2 is for climbers who are looking to develop their technique and start to explore harder grades and terrains. This includes climbing specific techniques as well as introducing the breadth and depth of different style of climbing, environments and approaches. It explores techniques to enable climbers to both top rope and lead effectively on vertical and gently overhanging terrain.
  • FUNdamentals 3 looks at advanced climbing movement and techniques in more demanding terrain to enable climbers and boulders to maximise their climbing on wide range of angle from slap to steep.

There are 2 further courses which may be of interest:

  • Physical Training 1 provides an introduction to physical training for climbing, in a practical and applicable manner that will enable participants to develop an appropriate training plan that will help to improve their phsical attributes for climbing.
  • Coaching Children explores how to better adapt your delivery when working with children across a broad band of ages. This is designed to complement other FUNdmanentals workshops and across the entire spectrum of climbing qualifications.

We deliver our FUNdamentals workshops in a fun. Friendly and relaxed way with plenty of chances to discuss a variety of approaches to the delivery of common climbing movements that participants can adapt to their own environment. Together we will explore and discuss how to develop climbers' movement and techniques in a variety of environments which will include games-based learning and coaching drills and setups.
